As a clinical nurse, I’ve worked in a multiplicity of specialties from surgery and endoscopy to managing primary care offices. In 2010, however, longing to find ways to improve patient care, I helped establish cancer screening and prevention services out of my medical facility.
With Kentucky having the third highest cancer rate in the nation, I discovered many communities with limited access to screening services. First, we developed a colon cancer screening program later recognized by the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and published in its Hospital Handbook for CRC Screening Best Practices (2018).
Next was a lung cancer screening program that grew to 21 sites across central/eastern Kentucky. At the time, it was the largest in the U.S. I was invited to present our program before the U.S. Congressional Caucus for Lung Cancer Awareness in Washington, D.C.
Later, upon learning about Leo Cancer Care and its products designed to be a “more human” way of delivering radiation therapy by positioning patients in an upright position, I knew I wanted to be a part of this innovative and inspirational team.
Now, I am able to work with exceptional people who match my passion for patient-centric care. Every day brings challenges and blessings. And with our new website, Rise Up Against Cancer, cancer patients can find resources, education, encouragement, and hope. The fight is not over.
